Gwanghwamun and Myeongdong Transform Ahead of BTS Special Performance

The heart of Seoul is turning a vibrant shade of violet. With only four days to go until BTS takes the stage for their historic special performance at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21, the surrounding districts of Jongno and Myeongdong have entered a state of festive frenzy. From “freebie” giveaways to massive retail discounts, local businesses are rolling out the purple carpet for the global fandom.

Police estimates suggest a staggering 260,000 people will descend upon the Gwanghwamun area this Saturday. To manage the influx—and celebrate the occasion—restaurants, cafes, and fashion giants are launching exclusive events aimed at both the ARMY and curious citizens.

A Taste of Purple: Free Bowls and Limited Editions

The culinary scene in Gwanghwamun is gearing up for “performance-day specials” that go beyond the usual menu.

  • Gwanghwamun Myeonok: This local favorite cold noodle (naengmyeon) spot announced it will provide 1,000 free bowls on a first-come, first-served basis to fans and visitors on the day of the concert.
  • Coffee@Works (Ima Building Branch): In a nod to the fandom’s signature color, the cafe will offer a 20% discount to any customer rocking a purple fashion item.
  • Paul Bassett: The premium coffee house has launched a limited-edition Lavender Ice Cream, available through March 22 at four locations near Gwanghwamun. The soft-serve’s hue is a direct tribute to the “Borahae” spirit.
  • Changgo 43: To accommodate the late-night crowds, the Mugyo-dong branch will scrap its usual “break time” and is currently considering extending its operating hours deep into the night.

Retail Therapy: Myeongdong Goes Full “Borahae”

The excitement isn’t contained to the concert square. Nearby Myeongdong, Seoul’s premier shopping district, is pivoting its entire marketing strategy toward the global visitors arriving for the show.

LF’s Hazzys is leading the charge. From March 20 to 22, the brand’s flagship store, ‘Space H Seoul,’ and the Lotte Department Store branch will offer a 20% discount across its S/S collections. Visitors to Space H will notice a dramatic transformation: the storefront lighting has been flipped to purple, and the main display zone is now exclusively stocked with violet-hued apparel.

Kolon Sport is also joining the festivities at its Myeongdong flagship. Through the end of the month, the brand is targeting international fans with tiered rewards:

  • Spend ₩250,000+: Receive a custom Kolon Sport key ring.
  • Spend ₩400,000+: Receive a key ring and a matching umbrella.
  • Exclusive Deals: Store-limited items are marked down by 20%, while a special “Purple & Trail Running” collection will see discounts of up to 30%.

Meanwhile, K-beauty powerhouse Missha has tailored its Myeongdong promotions toward high-demand gift sets and travel packages, capitalizing on the surge of international tourists who have flown in specifically for the event.

“The atmosphere in Gwanghwamun right now is electric,” says a local shop owner. “It doesn’t feel like just a concert; it feels like a national festival. We want everyone—especially the fans coming from overseas—to feel the hospitality of Seoul.”
